Artificial intelligence has become one of the most significant indicators of high-tech’s future and technological advancement. With increasing industry demand for AI experts, the Ministry of Education has decided to address this need by establishing a new extended AI  academic program.

Initially, 50 high schools will participate in the program, designed for outstanding students studying extended mathematics and English studies,  alongside a chosen science subject (physics, chemistry, or biology), and with a background in Python programming.

Dr. Maya Gordin, Director of the Technological Education Department at the Ministry of Education, explained that this initiative responds to needs identified by academia and industry during an era when artificial intelligence is becoming central to the economy, industry, and society. According to her, various reports indicate a shortage of experts in the field, and establishing a dedicated track will help bridge the gap between supply and demand.

“Israel is considered a world leader in these fields, and establishing this new academic program will ensure the continuation of its technological leadership,” she explained.

The Ministry of Education emphasizes that the program’s success depends largely on the quality of teacher training. Therefore, they set a goal to train 50 teachers in the first year and certify approximately 200 teachers within four years. Industry and academic experts will be integrated into teacher training, while engineers and scientists will serve as student mentors. Students will also complete internships in high-tech companies during the summer.

Following Education Minister Yoav Kish’s declaration of 2025 as the “Year of Artificial Intelligence,” students will take the matriculation exam for the first time this year with artificial intelligence integrated into the data science exam, where they will be required to solve complex data analysis problems using AI tools.
